AZONTO 2011into 2012

Azonto is an original Ghanaian expressive dance and music form. Azonto Dance form incorporates complex co-ordinated body movement and non-verbal communication in a rhythmic fashion in very few one-two timed steps. Just like most African dances, knee bending and hip movements are rudiments to dancing it. The dance has effectively evolved from a few rudimentary moves to embrace depictions of washing, driving, boxing, grooming, praying, swimming, and others. Generally, the dance reflects the creativity and rich sense of humour of the Ghanaian people. The dance, which is usually performed with an accompanying smile, evolved from the combination of several local dance moves that originated from the southern-most part of Ghana during the early 2000s. The dance has evolved with the fast pace dance culture of modern West Africa. It is also true that before the dance became famous, youth in senior high schools of Ghana had a similar but different way of doing the dance. A modification of that is what we see today. It involved a similar movement of the feet, hands, and hips and, at the end of every move, a gun shot was mimicked with the hand and, if possible, the mouth. Azonto, when taught effectively can be learned within five minutes, according to experienced Azonto teachers.

The dance was made very popular by Ghanaian football star Asamoah Gyan in his goal celebrations for his club and during matches of the Ghana Black Stars. Azonto has been further commercialized with its inclusion in music lyrics and music video clips. Examples of such songs include African Girls by Castro, Shashewowo by Stay Jay, U Go Kill Me by Sarkodie, Wadi Mi Sika by Vibe Squad, Yenko Nkoaa by Eduwoji, Keche's Sorkode, Azonto by Fuse ODG which features Tiffany, and more recently Obuu Mo by EL, which specifically mentions the Azonto style of dance and features people dancing Azonto in the video clip. In December, 2011, the Azonto fever in Ghana was heightened when an ace Ghanaian disk jokey, DJ Black of Joy FM, released his Azonto Mix. This was a selection of popular hiplife tracks that make use of the Azonto dance rhythm. In the US, this dance is taking over the dance scene especially in colleges. Ghanaian students in Grinnell college [led by His Blackness, DJ Kojo] have been known to organize Azonto parties during the semester.

Dede Ayew Wins BBC player of the year

Ghana and Marseille winger Andre "Dede" Ayew has been named the BBC's African Footballer of the Year for 2011.

The 21-year-old took over a third of the votes to follow in the footsteps of his father, Abedi "Pele" Ayew, who won the inaugural BBC award in 1991.
Ayew beat Yaya Toure, Gervinho, Samuel Eto'o and Seydou Keita to the title.
"I'm honoured and surprised to receive this prestigious award, especially considering the great players who have won it in the past," said Ayew.

After making an impact on the international stage in 2010, when he impressed observers at both the Africa Cup of Nations and Fifa World Cup, 2011 marked a year when Ayew became a key figure at club level.

He finished the 2010-11 campaign as a regular starter for Marseille for the first time in his career, with his goal tally of 11 aiding his cause.
At the start of this season, he struck a hat-trick to help Marseille win the French Super League - and has since contested all but one of his side's 17 league games, scoring six times.
Injury ruled him out of Marseille's opening Champions League group game but the Ghanaian has gone on to miss just one minute of European action since then, as the 1993 champions reached the knockout stages.
At international level, Ayew also played a key role in ensuring that the Black Stars qualified for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations with an unbeaten record.
Abedi "Pele" Ayew was the first winner of the BBC African Sports Star of the Year award for his achievements in 1991, with the title later turning into the current BBC African Footballer of the Year award.

1.Embassy was approached by two advisors to National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate John Atta-Mills, Edward Nunoo and Sylvanos Tamakloe, who told Political Office that Electoral Commission (EC) Chairman Kwadwo Afari-Gyan was being pressured by the ruling National Patriotic Party (NPP) to announce false results that would be supplied by the NPP. The EC Chairman told Ambassador that the allegations were "utter nonsense." #WIKILEAKS

Ivor Greenstreet said that Nduom's campaign is entirely self-financed, and that money goes only to Nduom and his chief campaign strategist, David Ampofo, who receives about $5,000 a month to keep Nduom's name and image front and
center in the media. Although Nduom can't win, he hopes to establish long-term viability for himself through media recognition. #WIKILEAKS

When the Political office pointed out that the rumor mill had consistently put the Libyans in the NDC camp, Pratt said that Akufo-Addo's funding did not come from

normally flow into Akufo-Addo's campaign, and that "he hangs on to a lot of it."

Pratt said that he has a long-standing personal relationship with both Akufo-Addo and John Atta-Mills that goes back at least two decades. In reaction to Prof Mills claims about a sinus infection and his radiotherapy in South Africa, Foreign Service Health Practitioner at post notes that MRIs are usually not required to diagnose sinus problems unless a physician is concerned
about tumors. He also notes that radiation therapy is not usually used to treat sinus infections (usually antibiotics or surgical repairs are used), but that such therapy is more likely used to treat some form of cancer. #WIKILEAKS

In a January 17 meeting with Political Chief and visiting AF/W Desk Officer (reftel), Mills claimed to know about a recent plot to assassinate former president J.J. Rawlings. Rawlings may have some medical problems -- he trembles slightly and loses his thoughts frequently. He called on his colleagues for opinions and then insulted them in front of us. His raw outbursts and scattered ideas are typical, and as bizarre as ever. His views of a coming violent convulsion contrast with the much more moderate, democratic views of many others in the NDC party. Rawlings can however still whip up his own people to cause trouble if he chooses.

Rawlings agreed that the NPP manipulated the 2004 results, stating "killings will take place" in 2008, including possibly his own death, because the NPP is desperate to stay in power. #WIKILEAKS

PNC leader Edward Mahama agrees with the claim that Prez Kufuor supports Alan Kyeremanteng, recently telling Ambassador that the Asantahene (an important
power broker in the NPP and close to Kufuor) dislikes Akufo-Addo because of his ties to a rival traditional leader. #WIKILEAKS

Akufo-Addo is a formidable contender for the NPP slot. He is respected for his intelligence, political family background, and broad government experience, which includes tenures as Minister of Justice and Minister of Foreign Affairs. He is reportedly backed by NPP youth and Akyem businessmen. On the other hand, he has poor organizational skills and often comes across as arrogant and formal, which may not play well with many party activists and Ghanaian voters. #WIKILEAKS

Spio-Garbrah was a loyal supporter of Mills in the 2000 and 2004 races and has been very involved in the NDC. He served as Minister of Education and Ambassador to the United States under former President Rawlings. Nonetheless, he appears to have offended some section of the party, including his peers. Fellow party supporters cringed when Spio-Garbrah recently claimed that the NDC lost the 2004 election because of the quality of its leadership. #WIKILEAKS

Ghartey said that the key to quickly resolving the cases of the four narcotics suspects and the corrupt judge was authenticating their voices on the respective tapes. Predictably, the suspects have denied that the voices are theirs and Ghana reportedly has no experts who can authenticate these voices for use in court. He asked for USG assistance in providing a voice expert to authenticate these tapes (which are in the Twi language). #WIKILEAKS

Attorney General Joe Ghartey had ordered the arrest of the four main suspects caught on tape discussing cocaine deals, including a large shipment from the fishing vessel Benjamin (reftel). Ghartey thought businessman Alhaji Moro, who is also recorded on the tape, was not guilty because he stayed out of the room during the cocaine discussion and specializes in armed robbery, not drug trafficking. #WIKILEAKS

The purpose for this dinner remains unclear. Ghartey, a 45-year-old lawyer who was promoted from Deputy Minister to Minister in the last Cabinet reshuffle, may have wanted it for self-promotion. He booms forth his opinions (which are often overly emotional and difficult to follow)...He loses track of his thoughts, grabs people around him (he grabbed the Ambassador's arm on several occasions), and fumbles with the 2 pairs of glasses dangling from his neck. He combines charm with a subtle sense of menace and confusion. None of his entourage offered intelligent opinions on economics or Ghanaian politics writ large. #WIKILEAKS

CMS partnered with VRA (which invested $10 million), forming the Takoradi International Company (TICO). The goal was for CMS to duplicate VRA's own 330 MW plant, which is co-located with TICO. CMS has proposed a 110 MW "2nd cycle," which would be driven by the exhaust of the 220 MW TICO plant, representing a 50 percent increase in output.

Osei painted a more negative picture during his earlier meeting with the Ambassador, arguing that most Ministers disagreed with the entire premise that the thermal expansion deal was good for Ghana. He added that even if CMS satisfied the President's own concerns, he would hesitate to override the entire Cabinet, bcos CMS's only 2 supporters in the Cabinet, Mike Ocquaye and J.H. The Ambassador pressed Prez Kufuor on the benefits of the thermal plant expansion deal and exhorted him to meet with IFC and CMS to find a way
forward. She noted that CMS's President for Enterprises, Tom Elward, planned to visit Ghana next week, and urged Kufuor to meet with him. Kufuor relented a little from his earlier opposition as the meeting ended, emphasizing that he was open to discussion and meeting with Elward, and agreed the deal could be important for

The Embassy has received a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support Major Tandoh as Ghana's candidate for Deputy ITU Sec General. As Chairman of the NCA he repeatedly blocked and delayed the resolution of Westel's dispute with Govt of Ghana. He is also widely rumored to among the most corrupt GoG officials.

South African High Commissioner Molekane claimed that he had not had any
personal contact, but that his mission had contacted Rawlings' staff to facilitate his South African visa in 2005 and during the election in 2004, when Rawlings alleged that the Govts of South Africa and Nigeria were plotting to assassinate him. Molekane added that these contacts were informational in nature, and that the Government of South Africa felt the accusations did not merit any official

Canadian High Commissioner Bobiash criticized the international community for
hobnobbing almost exclusively with the Ghanaian elite, based primarily in Accra. He commented that this elite group, comprised of well-off and highly educated people is out of touch with the other 95% of Ghanaians. The elite have little understanding of or sympathy for the difficult conditions under which most Ghanaians live, and Bobiash argued they lack a sense of urgency to do much about it.

The American Ambassador expressed concerns about perception of rising corruption. British High Commissioner Wetherell agreed with the Ambassador
that there is corruption in Ghana and that some politicians are using corrupt means to get rich while they are still in power, including some officials in the Castle. However, there was no firm evidence that corruption in Ghana is increasing (in fact it appeared to be declining) or that corruption was large scale, he opined. #WIKILEAKS

Prez Kufuor came across as remarkably composed and calm, given that the U.S. Ambassador had clearly outlined for him the perception of growing corruption in his government. He appeared satisfied with his own version of events [regarding the true state of corruption in Ghana]. #WIKILEAKS

Ambassador asked Prez Kufuor how HP's bid for the national ID project had lost out to France's Sagem. She wondered how Sagem could underbid the Govt's own $60m estimate by $20m. Compounding Embassy's concerns were reports that the President's son Chief Kufuor worked as a consultant for Sagem, and Chief of Staff Kwadwo Mpiani, who oversaw the process, had manipulated it in favor of Sagem. #WIKILEAKS

The Ambassador also responded to D.K. Osei's accusation during the November 29 telephone conversation about Political Chief Scott's meeting with and passing money to Raymond Archer. Ambassador said Scott considered Archer one of a number of regular contacts in the media, met with him as a normal part of his political duties, and had not paid him money. She noted the Embassy's only direct support to Archer was a grant to study investigative journalism in the U.S. #WIKILEAKS

Ghana has taken steps to combat illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and has mounted major efforts against drug abuse. It has active enforcement, treatment, and rehabilitation programs. #WIKILEAKS

The editor of the Enquirer, who has been very aggressive in reporting on high level corruption, told PolChief on November 25 that he has faced serious pressure from the president and his staff to back off of corruption stories, especially related to his
investigation of the Confederation of African Football stadium deal (which implicates the GOG in accepting bribes from the Chinese) and the presidency's alleged use of procurement kickbacks to fund the ruling party. #WIKILEAKS

We do not doubt that Ghana is among the best in sub-Saharan Africa in terms of corruption, but its presence here as a very serious problem should be an indication of the long-term difficulties in bringing Western-style development in the near future. #WIKILEAKS

The first Nokia Windows Phone devices will hit consumer shelves in a world very different from the moment when Steve Ballmer and Stephen Elop first sat down to discuss a partnership.

And it’s in fact amazing juts how much the mobile devices market has changed in the last year alone.

Back in March 2011, CEO Steve Ballmer and CEO and President Stephen Elop announced the Microsoft and Nokia marriage, sacrificing Symbian on the altar of Windows Phone.

Elop said at the time that Nokia had considered adopting Android, but opted for Windows Phone instead. The billions that Microsoft agreed to pay the Finnish phone maker had something to do with that, I’m sure.

It’s hard to tell whether Nokia has started regretting the choice made just yet, but there’s still plenty of time. And there’s still the possibility that it will.

Earlier this month, Kevin Turner, Chief Operating Officer was talking at the Worldwide Partner Conference 2011 about Microsoft winning in phones.

“We know that mobile is important. We have to do some very strategic things to get our phone volume up. And we've made some huge bets. The first bet we made was with Nokia, which has about 38 percent of the world's smartphone share. We have dreams and aspirations that we can get to 100 million units per annum with that single day. That's the kind of progress we want to drive with phones,” he said at the time. (emphasis added)

Now, there’s winning, and there’s Charlie Sheen winning. The two, I’d argue, are somewhat very different things, but then again it might be a matter of perspective.

Strategy Analytics published the results of its latest research of the smartphone market in the second quarter of 2011, and surprise, surprise, Nokia’s dominance is shattered.

Nokia managed to ship just 16.7 million smartphones in Q2 2011 down from 23.8 million in Q2 2010, and has been surpassed by both Samsung and Apple. Samsung’s smartphone shipments exploded in the last year from 3.1 million to 19.2 million, and Apple’s iPhone experienced a comparable growth from 8.4 million to 20.3 million.

Both Apple and Samsung are selling considerably less devices compared to Nokia when it was king, but they’re now the new no. 1 and 2.

Furthermore, Nokia’s smartphone vendor marketshare dropped dramatically between Q2 2010 and Q2 2011, dipping from 38.1% to as little as 15.2%. In the same period of time, Apple’s share of the smartphone market increased from 13.5% to 18.5% and Samsung’s went up from 5.0% to 17.5%.

In all fairness, Nokia’s huge drop is understandable. Some might be tempted to blame the transition to Windows Phone and the core shift at Nokia, but although this was an expected collateral result of the deal with Microsoft, it’s not the only factor.

I mean, look at RIM, the company’s one foot in the grave cannot be blamed on Windows Phone, as such, it must be something else instead.

If you were to ask me, is Nokia’s constant and continuous failure to provide valid alternatives to the iPhone and new devices from the likes of HTC and Samsung is a key part of the problem.

I remember when Nokia N97 came out not that long ago. This was the phone that I was going to buy, until I got to test it for about five minutes. Then I started looking at HTC devices. I purchased one almost immediately. Previously, I had owned a number of Nokia phones, never one from HTC, but the decision was simple, and one of the best I made in my life.

As far as I’m concerned Nokia N8 and Nokia E7 were the first devices from the Finnish maker worth a second look as smartphones. But they both fell, or should I say, crashed, in the too little, too late category.

Then there’s Symbian. Evolving slow, bringing no innovation at all year after year, the epitome of everything that’s not user-friendly, Symbian also has its part of the blame. But it’s already a thing of the past, so there’s no real sense of speaking ill of the dead.

And then, there’s Nokia’s monumental failure at creating a comprehensive application and service ecosystem for Symbian. I still remember what it took to find, download and install an app on a Nokia phone. A kind of a never-again experience.

There simply isn’t room for Nokia’s share of the smartphone market to drop another 22.9%. Nokia would fall off the map entirely. They might as well reinvent themselves as a fishing company.

And although Windows Phone is innovative and evolving rapidly, user-friendly and with a growing ecosystem, it might not be a parachute big enough to stop Nokia from its free fall.

The conclusion is clear: consumers are buying fewer Nokia smartphones and more Apple iPhones and Samsung devices. It will be extremely difficult for Windows Phone if not impossible, Mango or no Mango, to breathe new life into Nokia and to reverse the current trends on the smartphone market.

Especially when the strong growth that Apple and Samsung are experiencing is rapidly closing the window for Nokia Windows Phone device.

For those who do not know already, there a few unencrypted channels on Eutelsat W4 and Eutelsat W7, both located at 36° East. DStv was formerly on W4 but is now beaming its signals from W7. The information I am sharing relates to how to view the unencrypted channels that share the same satellite as Multichoice’s DStv, and not how to illegally hack into DStv’s encrypted channels.

DStv decoders are designed, manufactured and sold to receive Multichoice services only. Therefore, I offer no guarantee that all the channels I am sharing would necessarily work on your DStv decoder. The DStv HD decoder for example, does not offer a “Public bouquet” and even for the single view decoders that do, one might be unable to watch the unencrypted channels once subscription is overdue. It would thus make the most sense to simply buy a good MPEG4-compatible digital satellite receiver and connect same to your satellite dish. There would be more on that later.

Africa's World Cup seedings announced
Brazil will host the 2014 World Cup
The seedings for Africa's 2014 World Cup first and second qualifying rounds have been announced.
This comes after football's world governing body Fifa unveiled its latest monthly rankings on Wednesday.
The 2014 World Cup qualifying draw will be held on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro.
Brazil will host the competition from 12 June - 13 July 2014.
A total of five Afican nations will qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
Burkina Faso are the only one of the top seeds to have never contested a World Cup before, while 2006 finalists Togo could be knocked in the very first round.
FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND
Pot 5 (countries ranked 29-40): Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Togo, Liberia, Tanzania, Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Namibia, Burundi, Madagascar
Pot 6 (ranked 41-52): Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Chad, Swaziland, Comoros Islands, Lesotho, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, Mauritius, Seychelles, Sao Tome e Principe
The 12 countries in Pot 5 will be drawn against the 12 from Pot 6, who will play at home first. Aggregate winners from November's two-legged ties will advance to the second round.
SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND
Pot 1 (ranked 1-10): Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Cameroon, Algeria, Tunisia
Pot 2 (ranked 11-20): Gabon, Libya, Morocco, Guinea, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Uganda, Mali, Cape Verde Islands
Pot 3 (ranked 21-28 plus two others): Benin, Zimbabwe, Central African Republic, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Niger, Angola, The Gambia plus two first round pairings
Pot 4: the remaining 10 qualifiers from the first round
The 10 four-team groups will be formed by drawing together one team from each pot and each country plays three opponents at home and away.
The matches will start in June 2012 and conclude in September 2013.
THIRD QUALIFYING ROUND
A draw will split the 10 group winners into five two-leg ties, with the aggregate winners qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The first leg of these decisive matches will take place in October 2013, concluding a month later.
N.B. Non-entrants Mauritania and non-ranked Sao Tome e Principe have not been included in the draw.

Problems of Mobile Number Portability in Ghana to users

While Mobile Number Portability is a great technology, it may cause a few problems to the users. They might be as follows:

1. The switching from one operator to another requires you to not pay anything so who bears the cost. Just like some say it, "Nothing comes for free". So you have to pay nothing charge to the new operator for using their service. It is expected that operators would find ways to charge you the maximum amount for changing to their service. While this is not certain, even the possibility of the same is a disadvantage.

2. You still have to follow the same old procedure of going to a shop, getting a new SIM and so on: If you thought that you would just send a SMS and you will change your operator which you are in the train, you are wrong. You still have to go to the shop and get a new SIM. So you cannot retain your old SIM (and all the phone numbers and messages stored in it). So we suggest, you get a habit of storing your contacts in your mobile phone memory instead, if you are going to use Mobile Number Portability service soon and again.

3. It takes time for the switch to take place: So if you want it to happen immediately, you cannot do it. Nothing is in your hands after you have started the process of changing the operator. One would have to wait for about 4 days for the switch to happen in the worst case. In the best case, it would still take about an hour.

4. Since it has not been made clear that when can a person use his new SIM card after applying to the new operator, it may cause problems to the users in some scenarios: Today you get a new SIM and start using the moment you buy it. This will not be possible since the new SIM you buy will not be active unless the number is transferred to the new operator, which may take time of the old operator is snail paced.



Problems of Mobile Number Portability in Ghana to operators

While the operators gain the most out of this service, they also lose it the most! Following are some of the things which make the matter complicated for the operators:

1. Technology change: Since Mobile Number Portability in Ghana will ask the telecom operators to use a slightly different technique that what is already in use, they will have to invest in a newer (and perhaps even more costly) equipment to support Mobile Number Portability.

2. More competition with other companies: The competition between operators will become fierce as they can lose the customers anytime.

3. Underlying network changes: Changing the current call routing scheme (that is technical needs some readjustments in the networking within the operator's own network. This is challenging especially when they do not want the service to be disrupted which the technology is being changed under the hood. It would be like changing the engine of the car while it's running! This is certainly going to be a problem for the backend team of engineers who will do the real technical job here.



Problems of Mobile Number Portability in GHANA for Government

Once again, there are some quite new problems this technology will invite for the government when implemented. Some of them are:


1. Loss due to dropdown in number of mobile numbers: Since many people maintain two numbers just because they cannot change the operator who serves the number they have used till now, but want cheaper and better plans and features may remove the additional numbers, implementation of Mobile Number Portability in short, reduce the total number of mobile phone numbers from Ghana and hence will the revenues from the companies drop. Not only this, the number of people change their mobiles will also get slightly reduced due to various related issues.

2. No More number series reservations: Since numbers can be reused and the 'mobile number series' aspect will be removed after Mobile Number Portability in Ghana is implemented, government is sure to lose the revenue that came to it for the maintenance of those number series. (Note that this might not be entirely true but is very much expected to happen)
